Chapter 4 Trail Thoughts and PANDEMONIUM
  • Come on man skip the rules. We get it by now. Except for Akane, probably.
  • Im here todaybecause coach Nekomaru risked his lifeto protect meIm gonna be the one who avenges him! Ill definitely find out who the killer is! Yeah Akane that seems doubtful based on your past history but I appreciate your enthusiasm.
  • I just realized that both Fuyuhiko and Akane were saved by someone else who is now dead. Wonder if that is going to be a theme or if well see anyone else that gets saved before the game is over.
  • Kazuichi panics because Hajime was with Sonia and Chiaki first thing in the morning and insinuates the three of them spent the night together. Kazuichi, Hajime wishes he was half the player you imagine him to be.
  • Sonia: Imbecile! I am not some woman with flexible legs! Great use of the word imbecile. That is a really awkward way of saying you arent a skank, but good use of the word imbecile nonetheless.
  • Akane: Theres no way a chick would kill someone so cruellyso it must be one of you Strawberry House dudes. First off women can do anything they put their minds to, even murder. Secondly the last two killers were women and the one two cases ago specifically killed someone with a blow to the head. So, no. Objection. Objection all over the place.
  • Kazuichi seems to think the hammer was the muder weapon in spite of the fact the hammer is in perfect condition and has no oil on it. I smack him upside the head with some cold hard TRUTH.
  • Akane: Youre pretty insightful, Baby Gangsta! Damn thats a good nickname for Fuyuhiko and Im going to be mad if I didnt use it for him at some point already.
  • Everyone dunks on Kazuichi for having a dumb idea, and he sheepishly relents going lol jk I was just testing you guys! It was just a prank, bro!
  • Chiaki then declares that the murder weapon would need to be something that does have blood on it. Which means the murder weapon wasNekomaru himself! AHA! Beaten to death with his own body. That ol trope.
  • Or maybe that huge pillar I guess. That's less cool but "fine" I guess.
  • Theres something weird about the room itself though that might be a clue. Theyre very clearly telling me hey this layout isnt the way you think it is. Maybe my ramblings about one house on top of the other turned out to be right?
  • Now we have to discuss how maybe the pillar wasnt the weapon because you couldnt pick it up. Yeah, no kidding IMBECILES (good word Sonia, love it). We dont have a Casey At Bat situation here. I bet you could push it though. Or at least you could if you were a magical robot.
  • Oh hey Akane points out Nekomaru couldve lifted it. Sorry I called you dumb, youre ok. She also says it wouldnt matter because Nekomaru isnt the kind to commit suicide, but I still think he mightve if the alternative was all his friends starving to death.
  • Oh hey maybe this really was a suicide? Hajime flashes back to Nagito mentioning the suicide from the last game and then hes like BUT THERE IS NO WAY THIS IS A SUICIDE RIGHT GUYS. I lean in closely to his ear. I know what youre doing, friend-o. And it isnt working on me.
  • Dang both Sonia and I are wrong. There were no pillar fragments on top of his body, only underneath. Which means the pillar fell first, I guess. There goes the last shred of my "crushed himself with a pillar" theory. Im not quite sure a pillar being pulled down on top of him would leave fragments on his body, but I am not expert on robot murder so Ill believe Hajime on this one.
  • When we cant figure out how the pillar was used to kill Nekomaru, Nagito gets all pouty and complains about how we arent being special enough and living up to our ultimate status. Nagito you mustve been a lot of fun at parties before the world ended.
  • Fuyuhiko: Hey Nagitowhat the hell happened to you? Follow up question: HOW DARE YOU.
  • Seriously though something is off about Nagito now. Hes cruel in a way he wasnt cruel before. I have no clue what was in that file, but it mustve been some tasty late game spoilers because Nagito is somehow now more crazy than he was before.
  • Wow Sonia straight up is horny for Gundham. He goes off on some crazy nonsense about how he was the ultimate weapon because bleep blorp Im a crazy person and shes like "no youre MORE than that because of your amazing hamsters and oops my blouse just popped open tee hee MY LOINS". Keep it in your pants girl, dude might be a murderer.
  • Oh cool time to find out the secret of the funhouse! Its dark secret? The contractors used asbestos.
  • You still dont realize it? Jeez, get it togetheryoure supposed to be the symbols of hope, arent you? Ah I forgotexcept for Hajime, of course. Hey, Nagito. First off, rude. Second off, one of these symbols of hope is Akane so dont get your hopes up to high.
  • Sonia is set to solve the secret of the funhouse. I think it must have something to do with the structure of the funhouse! STAND BACK EVERYONE SHES GOT IT. It is undeniable that such a sweeeeet building structure is the secret of the Funhouse! GET BACK EVERYONE SHES LOST IT
  • No one can figure it out so we have to go begging Nagito to help us. He is as helpful as youd expect (zero) and says he WANTS TO PLAY A LITTLE GAME instead in his best Jigsaw voice.
  • Nagito says he can give us a hint as to the secret of the funhouse by showing a very special picture he took while inside the Final Dead room. Man, do I hope it isnt his genitals.
  • And as he said thathe showed us a peculiar picture oh fuck it is his genitals isnt it?
  • Phew not genitals. Just a boring picture of some trees and the clouds. This photo tells us three things: 1) the first floor of strawberry house is higher up as it is above the tree line 2) grape house isnt in the photo at all and it appears there is just one structure leading to the tower 3) the ghost of Mahiru lives on through NAGITOS ARTISTIC HAND
  • Grape house is actually on top of strawberry house. Or is it the other way around? I already forgot. The important part is that these were oriented vertically. That confirms what I was thinking, and at least parts of this murder are making a bit more sense now.
  • Kazuichi flexes his muscles and tells Sonia to check him out solving the mystery of grape tower/strawberry tower in relation to the houses. Sonia yawns and continues eye humping Gundham. Its for the best because Kazuichis theory is someone built a replica Mechamaru and thats why we saw a body in both locations. Congrats Kazuichi that is the dumbest theory weve heard in a trial so far and Akane has been alive and saying things the entire game.
  • Chiaki instead proposes that maybe the floor just moved. Akane is flabbergasted and Chiaki is flabbergasted about her being flabbergasted. You cant think a device like that? A device that moves things to different floors in the same building. Honestly, she probably couldnt Chiaki so spell it out for her.
  • Oh actually I quite literally have to spell it out in a hangmans gambit. Cool.
  • Ok so cool we have now figured out the mystery of the very bad architect. Can we now focus instead on the mystery of who exploded Nekomaru?

The issue is you can easily have a scenario where Manchin ends up stonewalling, the democrats can't do anything other than acquiesce to his demands because that moron from NC couldn't not send sexts to people that worked for him, and then big brains go "AHA BOTH SIDES" and democrats get pounded in 2022 even worse than they probably are going to already.

Sure am glad Dems won Georgia that sure did end up mattering

I mean...it did. It has.

The issue again is people like Manchin. The headline reads "people from both parties!" but in reality 90% of democrats in the senate want the promised amount or more, a couple democrats want it phased out over high earners (which is a dumb idea just in terms of administration of it), a couple of republicans want it phased out over high earners, and then 90% of republicans want nothing.

So this isn't a "BOTH SIDES" thing.

Her daughter was hypothesizing she got hacked or something. Kellyanne has been documented as being verbally abusive for months so I'm not sure she's earned that benefit of the doubt but it at least isn't immediately clear what her intention was. She also doesn't seem to know why her mom had that photo in the first place.

Honestly, an idea I saw proposed not too long ago that I liked (though not as much as just eliminating the filibuster) is inverting how it works.

As is, the majority needs to get 60 votes to end debate and move forward. The idea I saw was to flip that and require the minority to produce 40 votes to continue it. At first blush it might seem like nothing (and that might even be politically advantageous to people who don't follow the minutia in all this) but it would basically require the minority to actually have to put in some actual effort and cost to obstruct things instead of being able to do so trivially. The GOP would basically have to keep 40 Senators on or near the Senate floor at all times because if someone called for an end of debate they'd have to actually have the votes on the floor to keep it going at basically all hours.

Like, it still feels like too much theater to me and they should just abolish it, but if you really want to appease the "but it's tradition~" folks I think this would be a fairly effective tool. Do McConnell, Grassley, etc. want to basically live in the Senate chambers for these votes? You wouldn't even have to change the 60/40 numbers (though you could do that on top of this!) or require it to be a talking filibuster (or tack that on as well!)

I think it's the better angle to try and persuade Manchin, etc. since at this point I do think it's exceedingly unlikely they straight-up vote to kill the filibuster. But if they can change it from something that requires zero effort on the part of the minority to something that actually requires they have to commit to with real effort, and physical presence... I don't know if all of them want to do that. But who knows, maybe they block something that gets Manchin to change his tune.

Manchin and Sinema have both sort of backed themselves into this idiotic corner of their own creation where I can't see them even agreeing to something like that.

They should've taken the Tester route of "no I'm not in favor of abolishing the filibuster but if McConnell and republicans are assholes with it then I will reassess". Manchin and Sinema were just flat out "no never nuh uh" so I don't see them going back. Could be their intention, obviously, but it doesn't give them any leverage coming up like Tester has.

Actually he isn't!

And while McConnell caved on the organizing resolution, I don't think he had as of the time of your post! He only did so like two hours ago! (And I don't believe they have voted on it yet so Republicans still chair AFAIK)

IDK if you knew, but as I explained in an earlier post somewhere (last topic?) that given that this Congress started at the beginning of the month, before GA, the Senate began at 51R - 48D (Loeffler was still serving as her appointment lasted until Warnock was sworn in; Perdue's seat was vacant.) Accordingly, the committees were formed under Republican control and chaired by Republicans. When Warnock, Ossoff, and Padilla were all sworn in on January 20th to make it 50-50, Schumer became Majority Leader... but absent a new organizing resolution to adjust the committees to reflect the new reality, they were still chaired by Republicans because that's how they were originally set up at the beginning of the month.

What McConnell has been doing the past few days is obstructing the organizing resolution, effectively filibustering the consequences of the election. Literally, even, at one point he tossed out a filibuster threat on the organizing resolution. He was demanding that Democrats agree to enshrine the legislative filibuster or else he wouldn't agree to an organizing resolution. The entire play was ludicrous and quite frankly I believe the Dems should have killed the filibuster right then and there to pass the organizing resolution because refusing to let the majority actually chair the committees should be absolutely unacceptable - and this was showing actual results. Graham, for instance, refused to schedule hearings for Biden's AG nomination/Garland, so it was literally holding up some Cabinet appointments. However, Manchin wasn't playing ball with the rest of the Dem caucus here. It's possible he'd change his tune if this dragged on even longer (it's sometimes hard to remember it literally hasn't even been a week) given that literally this was keeping Manchin himself from assuming chairmanship of a committee but as someone who has soft-defended Manchin in the past on similar lines as you, and for the fact that he's always been there when it mattered, this was extremely disappointing to me.

Now, McConnell caved here so this fight is over, but consider me unsatisfied with how this all played out in terms of how things will go moving forward. I'm still going to wait and see, but I'm a bit more pessimistic now than I was before.

No, that's my fault. I thought this was something that was resolved earlier today. I read something on Twitter, but obviously something was misreported or I read it incorrectly because I thought all this got sorted out already. My mistake!

Like I ask myself:
Is the senate better or worse for Manchin beating his democratic challenger in the 2018 primary? Better.
Is the senate better or worse for Feinstein (and others) beating their democratic challenger in the 2018 primary? Worse.

I'm more concerned getting the latter group out of the senate. Those shitty corporate democrats from safe states that aren't doing anything and are standing in the way of progress. I'm less concerned about people like Tester or Manchin who are our only shot of getting democratic numbers up in otherwise unwinnable states.

But I feel like I've posted this sort of argument before and I'm sure people are sick of hearing it by now.

Well no, letting Dems take committee chairs is exactly what he is refusing to help with right now.

Alternatively, Manchin only just barely won in a massive Democratic wave year, which 2024 probably won't be.

I mean, yes, Bernie Sanders is the chair of the budget committee.

And I know I've posted stuff like this before, but I have far less annoyance for Joe Manchin than I do people like Feinstein and Warner:
https://newrepublic.com/article/161013/dont-worry-joe-manchin

Again, it isn't that Manchin is good. But graded on the "whoever the hell WV is going to send to the senate" curve, we could do significantly worse. And unlike someone like Doug Jones, Manchin's career isn't necessarily over in 2024. I wouldn't say he's safe but he at least has a chance which Doug Jones never did. I will not defend Manchin's actions on...like anything. I just think our energy is better spent toppling senators from states we can get better senators from.

I'm pretty sure the usual claim is "Machin is slightly better than a WV Republican", which is true (but doesn't mean much).

That said, Machin deciding to just let the GOP keep control of committees is awful. I don't even think he gains anything from it; even if he doesn't retire, his reelection chances look pretty bad right now. Is he actually delusional enough to think the GOP wants to work with the Dems?

Manchin won in 2018 with Trump campaigning against him and against a strong candidate. I don't think his election chances are all that bad, but it requires him to routinely have bad positions otherwise he isn't going to be popular in WV.

We need PA in 2022 desperately.

Yeah I'd like to know who "keeps defending" Manchin because I haven't seen it

He might be talking about me?

But my argument has never been "Manchin is good!" but "Manchin is important because he is a democratic senator from the second reddest state in the country". He's not a good senator by metrics, but his Trump score was the second lowest outside of Sherrod Brown who is just magic and you aren't getting a better senator from WV because it is a garbage state. Our goal needs to be where Manchin isn't the 50th senator because we all know what he is.

Although Manchin gets us chair of the senate budget committee Bernie Sanders and is honestly worth it for that alone, imo. So like...I'm not defending Manchin in a vacuum. But running him out of office gets us nothing. Ire needs to directed at people like Feinstein who is as useless as Manchin on a lot of issues but from fucking California. Pretty sure Feinstein is against blowing up the filibuster too. As is Sinema, who is also from a bluer state. There was like a list of seven I saw earlier today and Manchin was the least of my concerns from them.

Its more if an ump was giving one pitcher the outside corner all game but then for the other team called ball four on the same pitch in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded to walk in a run.

I even said when it was called that in a vacuum thats a good call. But they had been letting that go all game up until that point and then the ref held the flag for like an extra two seconds thinking it over.

That isnt why GB lost or anything and I put it on the egregiously bad FG more than anything else but I still say that is a bad call given the context of the whole game!

3 TD 3INTs, typical Tampa Bay quarterbacking

You can take the Jameis Winston out of Tampa Bay but you cant take the Jameis Winston out of Tampa Bay.

Also story of the rest of the game may be not having a starting safety for the rest of the game.
